Vicki has always been drawn to dragons and faeries, she believes since about the
age of three, the same time she knew she was destined to be an Artist. Born in
New Mexico, “The Land of Enchantment”, her Mom encouraged her to color outside
the lines, while Dad took her to every art event she could enter…they always
believed…
Her journey has always been in the arts, whether it was in owning a gallery in
Silver City, New Mexico or teaching art to thousands of elementary students.
Vicki has instructed teachers in how to use art in their curriculums, and taught
at risk teenagers for a mural, entitled a Tapestry of Dragons & Unicorns,
that has become a permanent exhibition at the Lied Discovery Children’s Museum
in Las Vegas, NV where she now resides. She judged an international art
competition for high school students, sponsored by Art Quotient Art Annual and
has a degree as a graphic designer, but her life has come full circle as she has
returned to her passion of creating her “Art of Enchantment, Faery & Myth”.
Two years ago, Vicki decided
to expand her career and her images were licensed on paper products. With this
in mind, she co-founded an online company, Women of the Myst, an artist
marketing and networking site. Her next goal was to win the coveted Muse award
given by ARTV. The program, a Golden Globe type event, the first of its kind,
was held at the MGM Grand Hotel in 2005 and later broadcast on the BRAVO
network. Out of fifty nominees, the first Muse award went to Vicki in the
category “Drawing” for “Mermaid Moon Rising” and two of her pen and ink
images. With her usual flair for the dramatic, Vicki took to the stage in
shimmering Fairy Wings and a gown that looked as if it was spun from amethyst
crystals. She is not an artist to sit on her laurels, and since then has been
licensed on many additional items including, giftware and tiles. All of these
experiences have brought her to this point, the publication of her first book, “How
to Draw and Paint Dragons”, through Llewellyn Worldwide, release date 2008.
Her artwork is beautiful, romantic, even sensual. Then one looks closer at Vicki
Visconti’s “Art of Enchantment, Faerie & Myth” and a whole world is discovered.
An ancient world born of European ancestry and filled with wondrous visions of
chivalry, light as air nymphs skipping through mist infused forests, ethereal
fairies floating on gossamer wings, and dragons with brilliant purple and gold
wings swooping over stark cliffs filled with knarly trees that seem to be born,
not of earth, but of man. Celtic knots form the backdrop for a wayward nymph.
There are faeries that hold keys seemingly to nothing and Dryads-women trees
stand near waters that flow from streambeds of mystical beauty. The rich jeweled
colors she uses add to the timelessness of the artwork, making them not about a
single story, but more of universal emotion, such as joy, contentment, or
satisfaction. These images come to Vicki through
memories that may have been passed down through her very soul for centuries.
It is one thing to dream of
magical realms of old, another to translate them into masterpieces of watercolor
and oil, or sometimes pen & ink. Ms. Visconti does it, if not effortlessly, at
least relatively so. She is a master illustrator with many book credits. The
rich colors she uses in her paintings vibrate with emotion and are achieved by
layering colored pencil and ink over watercolor, or glazing in oils. The
layering is also representational of the connectivity we all share. She is
comfortable working in any medium, including oils, though she reserves this
medium for her large format pieces. We see the influences of her love of ancient
history in her drawings and paintings. Although Vicki’s style is unique, her
artwork has influences of her European ancestory, Celtic art and the
Pre-Raphaelites, along with modern masters in her field including Brian Froud
and Alan Lee.
Her talent is indisputable.
Some how she transports herself, and therefore her viewers back in time. She
brings us an encapsulated vision of a distant and archaic land where magic is
real and Faeries and Dragons are friends to humankind. Whenever Vicki sketches
or paints, her imagination leads her to forgotten realms. Vicki’s hope is that
you too will be taken to another time, and another place, somewhere that “could
have” or “has been”. A world long past when all living things were
more intertwined. A place of Dragons and Enchantment… If one looks closely, a
glance at out ancient collective past might be seen…
